Episode #4-1: "Crusade"

Added 8/27: How are they going to get away with Clark flying? USA Today printed this tidbit alongside an interview with Executive Producer Alfred Gough: "And in a big (if temporary) departure from its "no flights, no tights" rule, this Superman will fly in the season opener. Gough says the script provides a loophole because Clark has been "reprogrammed" as Kryptonian alter-ego Kal-El. "He can only do it once; by the end of the episode, he can't do it anymore."

Added 8/16: Apparently Clark splits into two beings at one point in this story - the Clark we all know and love and "Kal-El," which would explain the convenient flying.

Added 7/30: Dr. Swann returns? Possibly... see Rumorville for more.

Added 7/19: Michael Rosenbaum revealed to Sci Fi Wire that his first scene filming will involve Lex on a jet.

Added 7/15: Lois Lane will be in at least 13 episodes of Season Four, which sounds almost like a series regular to us!

Added 7/12: Lois Lane will indeed be played by Erica Durance. Lois is "a college freshman with no interest in journalism who comes to Smallville to investigate the death of her cousin Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack)."

Added 7/8: The role of Jason Teague has been cast, with Jensen Ackles (Dark Angel) playing the role. The Hollywood Reporter said when making the announcement that Jason is "the stubbornly independent heir to a rich Metropolis financial firm who becomes romantically involved with Lana Lang."
- Lana makes the comment to Jason, "I thought leaving Smallville would give me the answers I've been looking for. Now I think they were there all along."
- Jasvon makes some snark about leaving a message on his answering machine, or a note saying "We'll always have Paris." It sounds like Lana is going to be wishing Jason goodbye, which calls into question if the Powers That Be have decided to just eliminate the Jason character idea completely.
- "Haven't you ever felt like you were destined for something you had no control over?" Lana asks Jason. "That's the way I felt when I met you," he tells her.
- Lana shakes her head, and then steps to the mirror, pulls off her shirt, and stares at a tattoo on her naked back. (Not sure if Jason's still in the room for that or not. But this must be part of her "carefree new look!")
- There are eight men in red velvet coats, in a chamber illuminated by candles. Their leader, "The Seer," says "It has begun."
- The Lois and Clark graveyard scene has been moved to later in the story. Lois is visiting Chloe's grave, with the plastic flowers and all, and she tells Clark that she's glad he's passed the clothing-optional stage in their relationship. "I'm surprised you remember me at all," she tells him.

Added 6/30: The title of the episode is "Crusade."
- The episode begins "Three months later..." Someone finds something in a shield-shaped chamber in Egypt. Something is found - a statue of the Egyptian sun god Ra. Suddenly, a man steps out, wearing a white suit backlit by the sun.
- Lois is driving into town and is completely lost, trying to use OnStar (cue Product Placement Pete!) for directions. She sees a lightning strike - could it possibly be Clark? In the next scene Lois does she say she thinks he was hit by lightning.
- Lois tries to get Clark admitted into a hospital, and Lois says "There's a guy here who needs assistance." She says he has amnesia so she doesn't really know who he is. (Shouldn't the Smallville Medical folks recognize him by now?)
- Clark steps to a window and sees his reflection for what seems like his first time. As he looks, the blanket he's wearing falls, causing Lois to deadpan that he may need a gown first.
- Could these preceding scenes mean the graveside first meeting for the two could have been a sham? Maybe.
- Lex lies in a filtration chamber on a jet, we assume recovering from the poison. Outside the jet, the captain sees something. "What is it? A bird or a plane?" We don't know... we think it being Clark may be a little too obvious, so don't worry. Update: Visit Rumorville some speculation on that subject!
- Lex is traveling to Egypt; perhaps having something to do with the teaser scene. He instructs a man named Tariq to hide any evidence of him ever being there.
- The casting pages have certain bits blacked out, but we could swear we see the name "CHLOE" among the blacked-out lines... meaning it seems Chloe may be alive and well, despite the graveside service. If that is indeed Chloe, her scenes take place in the Smallville Torch at night. Chloe leaves a message on the computer that says "Please find out who did this Clark. You're the only one who can."
- Martha visits Jonathan in the hospital.
- Clark and Lois first meet as Lois is visiting Chloe's grave, in a scene that may bring back memories of Clark and Lana's first real exchange of dialogue in the Smallville pilot episode.
- For some reason plastic flowers are placed instead of real ones.
- For more details on what the character of Lois may be like, visit our "Lois Comes To Smallville" page.

Other Spoilers - Posted June 2004: The Lois character is currently planned to be in four episodes.
- Despite the reason for Lois coming to town, we do not think Chloe is gone from the show. She may be gone for a few episodes, though.
- A new possibly ongoing character is coming to Smallville. The character is Jason Teague, an American college junior who is "charming, broad-shouldered," and will definitely serve to open Lana up a little bit. The two of them meet in Paris, and he may be coming back to the "leafy little hamlet" with her. They have a great time in Europe, racing through the Alps on a motorbike, seeing the Notre Dame, and more. (Oh, and those of you who are snarking that it'll be on a Vespa and not a real motorbike - go to the head of the class!)
- Apparently Lex is going to come visit Lana in Europe. Guess that means he'll be okay ;) "I feel like I'm not the person he said goodbye to. I've changed so much," Lana says. One might even be able to gleam that over the summer Lana had developed some feelings for him.
- All indicators imply that all seven of the show's regular cast will survive the finale cliffhangers... unless, of course, they're trying to trick us! How they'll pull this off is anyone's guess!

Episode #4-2: "Gone"

Added 8/8: Clark uses X-ray vision and knows that Chloe's body is not in her casket in the grave. Lois is confused about how he knows this.
- Lois and Clark end up with a loft scene. Right after Clark is mooning over Lana.
- Clark has a confrontation with Lex. "Does this mean you're talking to me again?" Lex asks. "Only because I have no choice," Clark tells him. Clark tells Lex that he wants his help in finding Chloe. Lex asks Clark if he thinks raising someone from the grave is setting the bar a little high. Clark tells Lex that he knows Chloe is not in the grave. Lex responds with telling Clark that "the reason Chloe's casket is empty is because there wasn't anything left."
- Clark asks Lex "Would you have given up this easily if it was me?"
- Lionel's goon, Trent, emerges from a molten sculpture. No, we're not making that up!
- Lex dials a phone and asks to "Get me Blye." Some fans have speculated that "Blye" might be a code name for Chloe, a reference to "Nellie Bly." "Nellie Bly was the pen name of Elizabeth Jane Cochrane, a pioneer woman investigative journalist in the late 19th century. She travelled around the world in less than 80 days which made her world famous and she also went undercover in at Blackwell Asylum posing as an inmate in order to expose the horrible conditions. She was kept there far longer than she intended due to a series of mishaps," Melisande has explained on the forum.
- Lana visits Lex, who is getting dialysis. Lex doesn't believe her when she says she thinks Paris just wasn't for her. It also seems the condition Lex was left in may be permanent.
- It sounds like Lex and Clark work together to find Chloe.
- Clark talks to his mother about his doubts about trusting Lex yet again. And *Martha* sticks up for Lex. "Ever since he met you he's been surrounded by things he can't explain. I guess we can't really balme him for trying to find the truth," she says.
- It sounds like the episode's conclusion will end with Lionel getting what he deserves. "I wouldn't miss this for the world," Lex says.
- There is a set listed for the episode called "Dr. Swann's Metropolis Office." Sounds like to us, if Dr. Swann does not appear, then his office at least will! Curious...

Added 8/2: Michael Ironside has been cast as General Sam Lane.

Added 7/19: Lex meets with a well-groomed FAA Agent named Agent Stockard. Stockard had been assigned to Lockerbie and the shuttle disaster in the past. Stockard reveals to Lex that the damage reports suggest that his plane accident involved a door being extricated from his aircraft; not air currents as originally believed. "Are you trying to tell me someone ripped the door off my plane?" Lex asks. "Someone, or something," he is told.

Added 7/17: After Sam turns down the Kents' invite for dinner and insists Lois comes with him, Lois makes a comment to Clark when she gives him that surprise hug goodbye. "This is all about Chloe. I know my dad's hiding something," she says.
- Clark enters Lex's hangar looking for Lex. As he makes his way around, he notices the fuselage is dented. A door is missing, ripped off its hinges. Clark realizes when he sees this that it was Lex's plane he robbed! (Apparently the robbing happened in the previous episode, and maybe the flying rumor is true?) His expression shows how rattled he is at seeing the violent result of his powers.
- Clark sees a photo on Sam Lane's desk of a two year old Lois with Sam and her mother. We learn Ellen/Ella Lane died when Lois was six. Clark tells her he's sorry. "Don't be. Unless you're the one who got her hooked on cigarettes behind the gym in high school." Lois confides to Clark that she doesn't really remember her mother. This is around the time when Sam catches them in his office (see below).
- Lois has a dramatic moment, but it's all an act to make Sam feel bad. (That's where the "you ever wonder why I never had any friends?" thing comes in). After Sam goes away, Lois returns to normal, and tells Clark he's such a sucker. "I think there might have been another reason you didn't have any friends," Clark teases.
- Clark hears something with his super hearing. Perhaps Sam returning?

Added 7/15: A convict attacks Lionel in his shower at Metropolis Men's Central. The convict is young and muscular, covered with tattoos. Lionel fights back and then is stabbed by the convict. Blood gushes.
- Lex empties his liquor cabinet by pouring its contents into a sink, likely to prevent a repeat of what happened in "Covenant." He turns around to find... Lana! (And that's where the page ends!)

Added 7/12: General Sam Lane, Lois's father, makes his first appearance on Smallville.
- "We had an understanding. You were supposed to stay away from the crime scene," Sam Lane tells her. He also told her that he was transferred to Fort Ryan so he could head their training program. "So you could keep an eye on me," Lois responds.
- Sam calls Lois his "little Lo."
- Jonathan invites Sam Lane to dinner. "He's a four star general, he deserves some respect," Jonathan says. (Guess this means Jonathan is okay)
- Clark does not seem to like Sam, and thinks that landing helicopters anywhere he wants is "extreme parenting."
- "My heart's not what it used to be," Jonathan says.
- Sam turns down the dinner invite, and wants Lois to come with him to the base. Lois says goodbye to Clark with a hug.
- Later on, Sam walks in on Clark going through his things. Lois doesn't back him up, and says "I walked in and found Clark going through your things!" Sam doesn't buy it, and says Lois is a bad influence, and demands they tell him what they're doing there or "you're going to wish you never stepped foot on my base."
- Lois has conflict with Sam, and says she never had any friends because he never stopped being the General. "It might help if you picked friends that didn't break into my office."
- Lionel is an infirmary at Metropolis Men's Central. He has wounds. A man named Trent tells him "Lex led me straight to her." Who "her" is, we're not sure, but Trent tells Lionel to "ante up or Lex and the star of your little show will testify tomorrow." "Make sure her silence is permanent this time," Lionel threatens. - A guard tells Chloe "Miss Sullivan, you have a visitor." We THINK it's Lex visiting her, but we're not sure.
- Lex is receiving some kind of dialysis, and he's brushing off the nurse when it's time to do it. "It's not a lunch date you can be fashionably late to," he is told.
- Clark finds one of General Lane's cigar butts in the hangar where Lex is keeping his jet. Interesting...
